The small upstairs room of The Telegraph in Newcastle couldn't have accomodated many more people for the heady occasion of Entanglement's first ever gig: vocalist/keyboardist Richie was obscured, for most of the audience, by the front row that loomed over him ... no stages here! As it was a showpiece night, the cynical may feel that the size of the crowd mainly attested to the number of friends that the fourpiece could call upon; but the band had to impress the followers of the preceeding two bands on the bill, and also wouldn't want to fluff it when their mates were watching. Entanglement followed the very impressive geordie rock 'n' rollers The Fiction, and as they'd never played live before, I wondered if the headliners would be overshadowed. This was by no means the case: the band played a set of soaring, epic songs full of arresting melodies, and looked very composed considering their experience. The piano-based tracks highlight Richie's great voice, and the level of musicianship across the band members is obviously very high; and bassist Euan entertained towards the end of the set with his wild, jerky movements that suggested he'd rather be playing in Fugazi. The only criticisms could be that guitarist Andy was too low in the mix to hear well, and that the band perhaps played one too many encores rather than leaving the audience wanting more. But it was their first gig and it went great, so who can blame them?
